Panasonic Lumix POST FOCUS feature

Focusing after taking a picture? That's impossible you might say, but Panasonic have done just that by letting you decide on the focus area sharpness of your photographs after taking them. Now just shoot the image on the spot to save it as you like later – it’s a whole new photographic experience for creative freedom.

Watch the video below:

How is it done?

The technology is based on 4K in what Panasonic now calls 4K Photo in their more advanced cameras like the GX8, GH5 and FZ300. Its essentially focus bracketing that stacks a burst of images together into a single file and allows you to choose which focus point you prefer after the image has been taken by touching the subject on the camera's rear screen.

What makes this interesting is that the camera uses its 4K video mode to record the bracket, so it can shoot 30 frames in a second providing 30 different focus points in just one second of burst/footage. During the 'exposure' the camera scans the scene from front to back and shoots a frame to cover every focus distance required, so the depth of the scene has an influence on how long the process takes. The resultant images are grabs from 4K video footage, and come out the other end as 8MP JPEG stills.

Situations where it can be employed CHANGING PERSPECTIVES: You can pull different perspectives out of an image depending on the part you want to be in focus.

MACRO SHOTS: You can choose the best shot that meets your photographic intention.

GETTING BEST IN-FOCUS SHOTS: You can always get the best in-focus shots.

Optional functions for more precise focus setting:

The good news: The Post Focus function will be available on LUMIX GX8, G7 and FZ300 by updating the firmware to version 2.0. It will be available on upcoming new models as well. Get the new firmware free of charge for LUMIX GX8, G7 (G70 in Germany) and FZ300 (FZ330 in UK).
